Baby Monitors: Mom’s Best Friend

Pregnant mothers take care of themselves during gestation knowing that everything that they come upon would affect the tiny baby growing inside them. She would take every precaution to avoid anything that is detrimental to the baby. Part of it would be choosing the appropriate nutrition and activity to ensure the baby’s safety. The mother already loves the unborn child.

After nine long months of waiting, finally a baby is born into this world. Seeing how cumbersome the baby is, the parent’s protective nature is invoked. Any parent would vow to do everything for the baby and would not let anything harm the newborn. She would want to keep an eye on her child 24/7. However, there are a variety of roles that a parent has to perform. She has to divide her time in taking care of the baby and fulfilling her responsibilities to other family members, and most especially to themselves.

A mother has one, two, many things to do around the house while making certain that their well-being plus their husbands satisfaction is maintained. Keeping watch of the baby round the clock is simply an impossible feat. Nowadays, the wonder of technology has contributed much to the comfort of mankind. And mothers are truly blessed to have baby monitors in their aid that would ease their burden.

What are Baby Monitors

Baby monitors are technological device that serve as a pseudo mother who is in vigil at bedside. It is a radio transmitter that release FM (Frequency Modulated) signal most commonly between the ranges of 48,830 to 48,890 MHz. These devices have two components, the transmitter and the receiver. Transmitters are being placed 8-10 feet within the baby or closer if possible.

Sounds coming from the baby are being picked up and a signal is then transmitted to the receiver. On the other hand, receivers are being carried around the house or place somewhere that is accessible to the mother or whoever it is designated to keep watch of the baby. Usually, the transmitter is plugged into a socket from its stationary position while the receiver is battery operated since it could be brought anywhere.

What Baby Monitors Do

Baby monitors generally help mothers oversee the baby without being stuck inside the baby’s room all day. Through this, mothers are able to do what must be done around the house thereby accomplishing a lot. From the time baby monitors have been first released, countless of innovations have been made.

A variety of products not only permits auditory signals to be heard but even allow the mother from the receiver’s end to visualize their baby and play music to soothe the baby even from a distance. To this date, they are no longer just an electric device to keep an eye when the baby cries but offers a number of advantages in ascertaining the baby’s well-being.

Some top of the trade devices have sensors placed under the baby’s mattress that detects even the most subtle of movements including the baby’s breathing. When no movement is detected for a span of 20 seconds or if breathing is below the medically accepted rate, an alarm is triggered thereby notifying mommy.

This proves to be truly useful in perceiving life threatening conditions. Whatever type moms choose to have, it will contribute enormously in making mom’s life easier. Baby monitors are definitely mom’s best friend.

Are Digital Baby Monitors Safe for Children?

Today, almost everything has gone digital. Cellular phones, computers and even simple household appliances, such as telephones and microwaves, have all switched to digital technology. However, the growing concern of many is whether these hi-tech gadgets can be considered safe for our health, especially in gadgets such as baby monitors that are usually placed in such a close distance to children.

A lot of parents nowadays fear that if they use a digital monitor to help them keep watch of their child, they might be exposing their offspring to too much of electromagnetic radiation and this may cause significant damage to the child’s nervous system. Children, after all, are much more prone to damage as their systems are still developing at such a young age. So we ask the question that many of these parents want to know, is it really safe to use digital baby monitors for children?

What is Electro-SMOG and How Does It Threaten Our Health?

Electro-SMOG is the electromagnetic energy that is emitted by common gadgets in our home such as our televisions, cordless phones, microwaves and digital baby monitors. Studies have been made over the years claiming that too much exposure to electro-SMOG can result to health problems affecting the nervous system of the body. A person may have such initial symptoms of headaches, disruptive sleep patterns, chronic fatigue and abnormal behavioral patterns in children.

How Are Baby Monitors Different from Other Gadgets with Electro-smog?

Because of the huge possibility of the electromagnetic energy used in the digital technology of modern baby monitors, a lot of parents are fearful for the safety of their child. But on the other hand, manufacturing companies of these digital monitors claim that the amount of radiation that their baby monitors emit are at levels that do not pose serious danger to children.

Phillips is one of these manufacturing companies that claim that the level of electro-smog released by their gadgets are 10,000 times lower from the safety norms that are accepted internationally. The company also adds a recommendation that for parents to have total peace of mind, they can position the monitoring device at least a meter away from the child.

Going digital in such technologies has many benefits, but there really are minimal risks involved. The digital models of baby monitors have proven over the years to be better in reception as compared to that of the older analog version. These models have also proven to be much better at providing privacy for the family. However, for many parents who are concerned with the safety of their child, switching to modern technology can certainly be frightening.

But as long as one knows how to set certain prevention methods such as placing the monitor at a safe distance from the baby (at least one meter) and not adding a lot of other appliances inside the baby’s room such as televisions or computers, then much harm on the child’s health can greatly be prevented. Always keep in mind that the monitor’s distance from the child is very important.

The greater the distance of the monitor from the child, then there is also a greater reduction to the amount of exposure to radiation. Most manufacturing companies nowadays have also been improving their products to make them less health threatening.

In conclusion, parents can always have the option for opting to the hi-tech digital baby monitors especially because its many benefits, but if fear for the safety of the child is still present, always remember that there are precautions that one can follow to minimize risks.

Babies And Bedtime Fussiness

If the baby is very small, is a new born baby then it is accepted that he will get up many times at night. But in case of older babies, it is not accepted. It is very frustrating for the mother if the baby goes to sleep after a great deal of effort and then keeps waking up frequently. It is a big achievement for the mother if the baby sleeps uninterrupted throughout the night. However, if the baby is not sleeping well then you must start thinking about his day time activities and how these are affecting his sleeping pattern.

The baby’s biological clock is not yet set up and if you don’t set a routine for them they find it difficult to settle down. Thus you must follow a fixed pattern. They automatically begin to understand when they are supposed to play and when to sleep and so on. When they are small we help them by setting a routine and we follow the routine as far as possible. For instance, in the mornings they can learn that it is bath, then feed, and then play. At evening they can learn that a story, feed and then lullaby is bedtime routine. Thus, if you follow this pattern for a while then the kids start remembering it.

You must also keep track of the times your baby has slept during the day. The baby may not go to bed at night because he may not be tired enough. You must play sufficiently with the baby to make him tired by the end of the day. You must also help him in discovering new things and stimulate him during the day. If you are not doing so, then you may have to change your own habits. The baby will then sleep soundly at night.

It varies with the age of the baby, but in any case he must not take long naps during the day. A baby who is of few months of age should at the most sleep for half an hour. The new born must sleep for a longer period of time. You should not allow the baby to sleep as much as he wants during the day. If you do so you are sure to have problems at night.

It is good for the baby if you can take him somewhere during the day. You may take the little one to your friend’s house, or to a park or even to the shopping mall. The baby loves the change and is stimulated too. It is something great for them when they see new things and the effort is tiring for them. Thus, they sleep well at night. With the passage of time their bed time fussiness will go away and you will not have to bother about it anymore. That is the best part of it all.

All You Wanted To Know About Baby Highchairs

If your baby is already of six months age then having a high baby high chair is very important for you. There are many types of chairs available in the market and some of them even recline. You may choose a chair which is specially made for small babies who haven’t yet learnt to sit but they may not be very useful if the child is not able to sit at least.

Highchairs for the child have more than sufficient features for the child and the parents; you will really be not using all of them. The seats are padded and they are very comfortable for the child. The wheels on the chairs make it very convenient for you to move the chair everywhere. Nowadays, you even get chairs whose height can be adjusted according to the child’s growth. Thus the child is always at the same height of the table in spite of having grown up. Even the footrest available is adjustable. The highchairs which are available nowadays can be folded away. You can convert the high chair into a play table also. There is an insert in the chair which can fit over the chairs tray, so that your child gets enough space to play. Some of the models have very big feeding trays whereas others have a bottle or cup set in the tray.

The highchair’s base is stable and broad. This doesn’t allow the chair to trip over, even if the baby leans over its side. Actually it is a good idea not to encourage the child to move about while sitting.

There are many types of highchairs. They may be made of wood or plastic or metal. Wood chairs are generally not adjustable.

You should however take the precaution of not leaving the child alone even for a short while; not even to go and answer the telephone, or get a bib or get some food. The baby in the chair must never be left alone. Accidents happen suddenly and unexpectedly. You must gather everything before putting the baby in the chair.

The baby must always be strapped to the chair. The child may slip from under the feeding tray and get hurt seriously. The older ones may slip and get stuck under the tray.

If you have a folding variety of high chair then in your haste you must not forget to lock it in that position. If the highchair happens to fold back, the baby can be hurt badly. Thus you must check the chair at regular intervals to rule out any defects.

When you are setting the tray for feeding the baby, just keep an eye on the baby’s fingers. They may get a cut or get hurt. You must also be sure that the lock is well set. Tug it a little and ensure it. If it is not tight enough or is not set properly the baby may fall down and hurt him.

Baby Back Pack Cross Country Carrier Stand Child Kid Sun Shade Visor

We love this! We took a trip to Moab, UT. Lots of trails, and this worked perfectly for our 2yr old. He loves being in it. He can see everything while we're hiking. It's pretty comfortable to wear too. My hubs and I both used it. It got uncomfortable for me a lot faster though because I'm not quite 5 ft tall and I just couldn't get a perfect adjustment. I was good though for an hour without problems. My hubs wore it for about 3 hrs without problems. I'm not sure about longer hikes because we didn't go on any longer ones. It's nice too because he can sit in it when it's not on our backs.

4Moms Mamaroo

This product works wonders for teaching baby to fall asleep, while weaning him off his dependency on nursing/rocking.

How it works:
1) Do the bedtime routine (nurse, bath, books/songs in that order)
2) Swaddle baby so only his arms are secure (you need those legs out of the swaddle to strap baby in)
3) Put him in the bouncer awake in a dim or dark room
4) Add lovey/something that smells like mom
5) Turn it on to full-speed and full-volume (bounce mode & white noise of your choice)
6) Walk away. Baby is asleep within 10 minutes!

Side effects:
- longer naps
- less night wakings
- a sense of relief & triumph

I was initially going to buy the Fisher Price swing but saw this and decided to splurge - turned out to be the right choice, because:
1) The difference between speeds is noticeable
The difference between speeds on the swing is barely noticeable, but on this one it's pretty clear. This is crucial for when you want to wean baby off of the device (keep lowering the speed until baby can sleep in it with no motion) & transition to the crib.
2) Multiple bounce modes
A swing only has one type of motion whereas this has 5 to choose from. If your baby falls asleep in the car, Car Ride works well. If he likes being bounced on an exercise ball, Kangaroo fits the bill. If he likes being swayed in your arms, Rock-a-bye it is.
3) The white noise is not on a timer
White noise calms baby and keeps him asleep longer. You want that noise on for the whole time baby is asleep.
4) Lightweight
Much lighter than you would expect, so it's very easy to move from one room to another.
5) Plugs in
No battery waste

Did I mention the design is stylish and sleek too?

All About: Diaper Bags

A diaper bag, as the name suggests is quite obviously a bag that stores diapers. However, most have enough space for a wide range of baby accessories and have proved to be a wonderful solution for busy parents.  A diaper bag stores diapers, toys, medicines, pacifiers, snacks and anything else you might need to keep baby comfortable and happy. As a matter of fact, diaper bags are as important as a diaper -- an equally indispensable part of a baby's growing up years.

Over the years, diaper bags have evolved immensely and are now custom-made in a variety of styles and colors to compliment mom and baby on their day out. Created primarily for convenience, some modern bags are a superb blend of logic and design, proving to be extremely functional as well as fashionable.

Traditionally, diaper bags were bulky carry-alls, made out of plastic(meant to be leak-proof) with one huge pocket and several smaller ones. They looked outdated and highly unattractive. Now, you may come across bags made out of micro fiber with plenty of pockets. There are others made of a combination of tweed and leather.

When buying a diaper bag, remember that the most essential convenience the bag should have is space for a variety of products beyond diapers.

Also keep in mind that prices for diaper bags start low and can go high(particularly if you choose a designer bag).  Another thing to keep in mind would be the budget. Parents should opt for bags that suit their lifestyle and those of their children the best.

Diaper bags, as we can see, diaper bags are extremely important for a baby. They contribute to the baby's mobility and also provide ready relief for parents who dread excess baggage while traveling with their babies.

About Baby’s Separation Anxiety

How do I feel about my child’s separation anxiety? Honestly, it’s absolutely one of the most delightful feelings I really enjoy as a mom.

I remember when my son was between 8-9 months old. Just like every mother, I couldn’t forget those moments.

At that time, he often asked for more attention from me rather than from anybody in the house. No matter where he was or who was holding him, as soon as he saw me, he suddenly cried as if he was asking me to hold him.

When I came close to him, he abruptly opened his arms and looked so happy. His cry stopped in a moment. It was truly an unspoken feeling I had experienced.

But there was also time when he acted differently from what I had expected. When I went for work, I thought he would cry hard to see me leaving him. I hugged him tight and kissed his face again and again.

I told him, “Baby, Mommy have to go to work now. Eat and drink a lot, okay? And have a good nap. I’ll be back. Love you much. Bye bye.”

Sometimes he kept looking at me when I said so. I expected him to start weeping. But it didn’t happen. I wondered why. I found out later that he was interested with the wheels of the car I traveled in everyday.

Whenever the car started to run, my son always kept his eyes on the wheels. Looking at them spinning must have been very exciting to him. I just smiled, though my heart broke a little. I soothed myself by thinking that it was good for him being curious of strange things.

My son is a baby who has sleeping problem. Throughout the night during his sleep, he often woke up several times. If he woke up and didn’t find me nearby, he would cry out loud, making the whole house panic as if something really bad happen.

When I got into the bedroom, he would crawl toward me, and then I hugged him. He’d be calm afterward. Breastfeeding really worked to put him back to sleep.

Thank God I decided to breastfeed him so that I wouldn’t be engaged with the rush of preparing formula during the night. Yes, I chose to breastfeed him in night times, even though he still got formula in day times.

Maybe this breastfeeding activity had created the bond between us. I enjoyed it, and still until now. This might also what made my son didn’t want to stay away from me.

If your baby or child has the same characteristic as my son has, I’m sure you have the same feeling as I do. If you think that your baby’s cry (for being away from you) annoy you, just remember that it won’t last forever.

Separation anxiety is a phase in your child’s development during his early years of life. Almost all children go through this experience. What I can suggest you is just enjoy these intimate moments before they’re gone along with your child’s growth.

From what I’ve heard from my friends about this, you’re gonna miss the moments. To me, even now, I really don’t want the phase fade away.

Wait, wait. There’s one more thing I’d like to share with you, which you may not think will make your child comfortable. I remember my friend told me that if you’re going somewhere, don’t forget to tell your child that you’ll be back. Instead of sneaking out of the house, waving your hand and saying that you’ll be back will soothe him somehow.

A New Baby Can Be Expensive!

"A new baby brings a lot of joy and hope to a family. It also brings some uncertainty. You may be concerned that your home is too small, or that you need a larger car, among others. Whether you are expecting your first or your fifth child, chances are that you need baby gear! There are hundreds of different items that you need when the baby arrives, and it is important to remember that stocking up doesn’t mean you have to clean out the bank account. If you do a little bit of research beforehand, you can get everything that you need at a fraction of the retail price. My favorite money saving tool is the e-coupon. You can sign up for e-coupons at a variety of different retailers, and start savings instantly.

The first question that a new parent-to-be asks is “what gear do I need?” There are many things that are convenient to have, and many things that are a “must have.” Once you distinguish between the two, you can start stocking up on the “must haves”. I recommend that you start shopping for bargains early on in your pregnancy. You will save more money, and eliminate the last minute rush that many parents undergo. Most baby sites will provide you with a checklist of the baby “must haves.” Print this list out, and then begin to compare prices and makes and models.

Every parent-to-be is on a budget. The trick is to make the most out of that budget. First consider looking at local yard sales for various baby gear. You can often get some cheap deals, on things that are in good shape. If you are looking for some really good deals, go online. There are hundreds of different baby sites, which offer many products at deep discounts. If you use an e-coupon service, you can get coupon codes to save even more on the items that are “must haves.” Most of these services are free to use, and can save you hundreds on your favorite baby gear. You may also try an auction site like EBay. I have found some great deals on items that you need everyday, like bottles and bibs.

Shopping for baby on a budget can be a lot of fun, if you approach it correctly. Create a list of the items that you want to shop for, and stick to it. Look for discounts and deals both locally and online. In no time, you will have a nursery full of baby gear ready and waiting for your new little bundle of joy! Congratulations and happy shopping!"

A Little Advice For New Parents

As a new parent you face many problems and issues that you need to understand and deal with immediately. Newborns do not come with an instruction book so here is some information on some things that you need to know about.

Bathing your baby: Your baby’s umbilical cord will fall off in about one to two weeks after they are born. Until it falls out, you should only give your baby sponge baths. You could dampen a cotton ball or cotton swab with alcohol to help dry the umbilical stump or simply follow your pediatrician’s directions. You can give him a bath in a sink or shallow tub after the stump falls off.

Caesarian delivery:  A caesarian is usually performed to make delivery safer for you or your baby.  C-sections can be done for many different reasons including stalled labor, complicated labor, problems with the baby that may make delivery difficult, or other problems.  It does not matter if you deliver vaginally or by a caesarian section, you are still a mother with a beautiful new blessing.

Circumcision:  A lot of doctors feel that there are many benefits to having your baby circumcised, but it may not be absolutely necessary.  It may help to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer.  Circumcision will not cause any long-term emotional problems for your child.

Crib death (SIDS):  Many studies have been done regarding SIDS.  Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:
Female babies are less likely to die from SIDS than Male Babies
The risk is greater with premature birth
Minority children are more likely to be affected by SIDS than non-minority children are.
More children of young, single mothers die of SIDS
Smoking in the home greatly increases the risk of SIDS

Some people think that sleeping with your baby is okay and continue to let their babies sleep with them. The American Academy of Pediatrics disagrees with this and says that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who sleep with another person. Babies should sleep alone in a cradle or crib either next to or near an adult. You should never put pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or anything that might put your baby at risk in their bed.

Most pediatricians recommend that babies sleep on their back to decrease the risk of SIDS. The reason for this is widely debated between health experts. If you have concerns please talk to your pediatrician. There are no dumb questions when it comes to the health and safety of your child, so please don’t be afraid to ask for help.
